Of course there are now heaps of messaging services around, but WhatsApp has had a massive head start on almost all of them, meaning it has tonnes of features.

You can read all about what it is and how it works in our WhatsApp feature, but for those who already know the beauty of the service, here are some secret tips you might not know about.

Get Siri to read your last message, reply or send a new message

Apple users can get Siri to read any unread WhatsApp messages, once you have followed the steps to give the personal assistant access. You can also get Siri to reply to the message with your voice or start a new message to a contact.

iOS: "Hey Siri, read my last WhatsApp message" > "Hey Siri, send a WhatsApp message to [contact]"

Hide the blue ticks

Those blue ticks can get you in a whole world of trouble, especially when you don't reply instantly and someone sees you have read their messages. You can turn them off, but it's worth noting that if you do, you won't get read receipts for your messages either.

Apple users: If you get Siri to read the message, the blue ticks won't appear so this could be a good way to read a message without the sender knowing you have.

iOS: Settings > Account > Privacy > Toggle off Read Receipts.

Android: Settings > Account > Privacy > Untick Read Receipts.

Turn words bold, italic or strikethrough

Sometimes certain words need more emphasis and shouty caps just isn't going to cut it. Don't worry, WhatsApp allows you to make whichever words or phrases you want bold, italic, or strikethrough them altogether.

iOS and Android: Add an asterisk either side of the word or phrase for *bold*. Add an underscore either side of the word or phrase for _italic_. Add a tildes to either side of the word or phase for ~strikethrough~.

Find who you talk to most

Who is really your favourite person? It might not be who you think. On iOS, there is a way to find the people you send the most messages to and how much storage each person takes up, among other things.

iOS: Settings > Data and Storage Usage > Storage Usage > Select Contact

Add dates to your calendar automatically

If you're prone to forgetting dates mentioned in various chats, it's possible to automatically create an event directly from WhatsApp on iOS.

iOS: Press and hold date within chat > Create Event

Mark chats as unread

Ever been out and about, read a chat and then completely forgot to reply? We do it all the time. There is a way to mark important chats with dot to remind you to go back to it though.

iOS: Chats >  Swipe left to right > Mark as Unread

Save your data allowance

If you've got a limited data allowance, you don't want WhatsApp munching it all away. Thankfully, you can customise when media is allowed to download, as well as ensure calls use as little data as possible.

Stop people seeing your messages

Ever passed your phone to a friend and instantly panicked about the messages they might see come through? Yeah, we haven't either. For those that have, you can turn off message preview on iOS so only the contact's name will appear, rather than their life story, or you can turn off notifications altogether.

In Android, it's not possible through the WhatsApp app but you can stop private information showing up on your lock screen in Android itself.

Hide your profile picture

You might not want everyone to see your profile picture, especially if you're part of several groups where you don't know everyone in the group. Or perhaps you just fancy being a little mysterious for the day. Either way, you can choose if everyone, no-one, or only your contacts see your picture.

Get shortcuts to specific conversations

Do you have a few extra special people you talk to all the time via WhatsApp? We do too. You can create a shortcut for specific conversations on Android, making it easier to access those chats you need all the time.

See recent chats without opening WhatsApp

Apple users can see which contacts they have unread messages from without opening the WhatsApp app by adding the WhatsApp Recent Chats widget to their device. Up to eight of your latest chats will appear within the recent chats widget when you swipe left to right from your main home screen or lock screen.

The widget shows the circular profile picture icon with a number of how many unread chats you have from that particular contact. You can then click on the chat you want to read and WhatsApp will open on that specific chat.

iOS: Swipe left to right from your lock screen or your main home screen > Scroll down to the Edit icon at the bottom > Add the WhatsApp Recent Chats icon > Rearrange the order of your widgets 

Bookmark important messages

Some messages are more important than others. Whether it's a date you need to remember, or a good restaurant you've been recommended. It's possible to bookmark these messages and find them all easily in the Starred Messages section.

iOS: Chats > Specific chat > Specific message > Double tap or hold down and press the star

Send a public message privately

Ever had a free evening and wanted to ask several of your friends if they are around without having to open up each chat to ask them seperately?

You can send a broadcast message to a list of contacts with it appearing as though you've asked them individually. Great for saving time, terrible if they all reply yes.

iOS: Chats > Broadcast Lists > New List > Add contacts

Find out how long you've been ignored for

There is nothing more annoying than seeing those blue ticks appear without a reply following soon after. If you want to torture yourself a little more and find out when your message was actually read and how long you've been ignored for, you can. We don't advise it though.

Customise notifications

There might be certain contacts you want to know instantly if they are calling or messaging you. To make sure they don't blend into the crowd, you can change their specific alert tones so you recognise when that particular person has sent you a message or is WhatsApp calling you.

So, you should try and minimize the number of concurrently running apps. There are a number of apps that run in the background. You can free the clogged memory by stopping the apps that you don’t need at present.

To see the list of currently running apps, go to Settings > Apps > Running App.

2. Keep All the Apps Updated

Keep visiting the app stores like Google Play (if you have Android phone) and iTunes App Store (if you’ve an iPhone). Mobile app developers keep on improving performance of their apps. Therefore it is highly recommended that you regularly update all the apps as and when a better version is available. Latest versions of apps may be designed to use lesser memory and CPU power.

3. Shut Down Your Mobile Phone

Shutting down your phone every once in a while is a good idea because it will completely refresh the memory of phone. When you will restart your phone, its memory will be free of all the unnecessary pieces of data that were lingering on and occupying the memory space.

4. Switch off and Remove Battery

This tip may not have any big effect at all in most cases. But it is also a good idea to remove battery and SIM card after every few months. Removing battery and SIM will clean the dust from the electric touch points.

5. Install Apps in External Memory (SD Card)

In most cases, by default, the apps get installed in the internal memory of the phone. This leaves lesser space for the running the apps and that in turn causes clogged memory. If your phone hangs, it is advisable to install apps in the external memory (i.e. SD Card) of the phone. Usually the external memory is larger than the internal memory. And external memory can also be easily expanded if required (instead of 2 GB card, just insert an 8 GB card!). Therefore, in external memory more apps can be easily installed without clogging the internal memory of the phone. This will save your phone from hanging.

For this you can set the default write disk. Go to Settings > Storage > Default write disk > Select SD Card. Please note that this setting is available in slightly different location in different mobile handsets. So, you may have to do a bit of look around.

6. Move Installed Apps from Internal to External Memory

You can always move the already installed apps from internal to external memory. As explained above, this will give more internal memory space for the smooth running of the apps. As a result your phone will not hang.

Setting for moving installed apps is usually available under Settings > Apps.

7. Delete Unnecessary Apps

You can also browse through the list of the apps installed in your phone. You might spot a few apps that you had installed once upon a time but you no longer require them. Uninstall such apps immediately. They stay idle in your phone and waste the all important memory space.

8. Delete Unnecessary Data (like photos, videos, songs)

If you have stored images, videos and songs in the internal memory; you’re really choking up the internal memory space and that could very well become the cause of your phone hanging all the time. Go ahead, take a look at all the pictures, videos and songs and delete the ones that you no longer need. Alternatively, first you can take backup of this data in your computer and then delete it from your phone. Photos, videos and audio take up most of the space the phone of an average smartphone user. And it is one of the common reasons why your phone hangs.

9. Identify Resource Hogging Apps

Some of the apps use much more memory than other apps. Game apps (like Angry Birds) are among the top memory guzzling apps. You can check how much memory each of your apps are using. For this go to Settings > Apps (or Memory) > Running Apps. Here you will be able to see which app is using exactly how much memory.

If possible, you may try a lighter alternative of an app that is using a lot of memory. For example, if you use a news app and that app is eating up a lot of RAM; you may consider removing that app and install another news app from the app store.

10. Install Antivirus Software

Viruses are a menace. If your mobile phone is playing host to a virus, the virus can considerably slow down your mobile phone. Needless to say, your phone will hang often. So, obviously you need an anti-virus. Although anti-virus software itself take up a lot of memory but it is better to have the virus removed.

11. Give External Memory Some Breathing Space

So far, we have been telling you about the importance of installing apps on external memory. But it should not mean that you choke up the external memory as well! Keep some space free in external memory also so that apps can easily store and read their relevant data. If external memory is also full to the brim, that can also become the cause of phone hang.

12. Use Factory Reset Option

This should be your last resort. If nothing else works and phone stills hangs, you can reset your mobile phone back to factory settings. Use of this option will remove everything from your mobile phone. You will lose everything that would be there in the internal memory. And it will be gone forever. All the messages, contacts, apps, bookmarks, photos, videos, songs, ringtone… everything will be deleted. Essentially, this option will make your phone just the way it was when it was produced in the factory.

2. Post publicly on Facebook.

Your goal is to let your friends know what you do for a living and how you can help them. For example, if you're a realtor:
